mundial.
Decidimos usar nuestras cuentas

Africa Health and Community
Program (AHCP) is a nongovernmental organization that centers on helping the
youth of Kibera create a self sustainable community capable of efficiently and
adequately responding to its own needs. AHCP focuses on entrepreneurships,
women empowerment, health, sanitation and hygiene and also provides tutoring
and a safe, clean, noise-free environment for the children to do their homework
in hopes that one day they will be able to grow out of the slums and move on to
better and bigger things. The goal is to teach these children that there is
life outside of the slums and that the world is a much bigger place, filled
with more opportunities than what they are used to seeing in the closed
compounds of the Kibera slum.
Every year, the
participants and beneficiaries of our programs display their gratitude for
equipping them with the skills they need to improve their living situation.
Visitors and beneficiaries alike commend our efforts, finding it impossible not
to see the progress we have helped implement, however large or small. We have
assisted people in this community of all ages, whether by offering them lessons
in computer skills and entrepreneurship, bringing toothbrushes to children in
schools, many of whom had never brushed their teeth, giving grants to men and
women to start up businesses, or providing a quiet and well lit library for
kids to do their homework after school. Our programs have led many to steady
incomes and financial independence, in turn putting more food on the table for
families and strengthening the Kibera community’s chance of a brighter future.
Our interns pay for the
costs of all projects and materials. In addition, the rent is paid from
fundraising and personal accounts - all to help and keep our focus on the
community. Seeing the participants grow and share their stories to others
encouraging them to take part is our reward.
We hope it will be a
partnership you value and will want to build upon.
We (Yasmin Barbosa
Seoane, Valéria Londono and Martin Njuguna), as volunteers from AHCP, are
developing a new project called “Water for kids in Kibera”.
Background information
Background information
The first week we
(Yasmin and Valéria) were working at AHCP on the health and sanitation programs
we visited more than 10 schools to keep an updated track of programs (like the
"Handwashing", "Toothbrushesing", "Gardering" and
"Sanitary Towels" projects) that were implemented in 2013.
Problem statement
Problem statement
During our journey in
the slum we noticed that a lot of schools have had much difficulty in
maintaining the projects mentioned above due to the scarcity of water. Most of
the schools have to buy all the water they use, and because of budget limitations,
sometimes they don't even have it for the most basic things, as drinking. The
difficult access to the water is not only a problem for the implementation of AHCP's
toohbrushing and handwashing projects! The access to water is fundamental to
prevent some diseases and therefore is part of the objective of our
organization.
During our research
we found out that the problem is bigger than what we could have imagined. Every
year 3.5 million children globally do not live past five years of age due to
diarrhea and pneumonia. These are common
diseases which can be prevented effectively and affordably through hand washing
with soap, which is the single most cost-effective health intervention. Also, 30,000 children die
each day from contaminated water and 85% of all diseases in African children
under 5 are caused by water-borne illnesses. The United Nations reports that
20% of the world’s population struggles to gain access to safe drinking water
every day.
For Kibera Community
the water is not only important for health and sanitation but also for a lot of
basics things like cooking the food and drinking.
After visiting more
than 10 schools in Kibera, we realized that to develop this type of projects
(health and sanitation) first the schools had to have access to water. We
researched how we could help to solve this problem and we found out that saving
water from the rain is the most viable way to do it because:
- In Nairobi there are 3 seasons of raining, so the country doesn’t stay more than 3 months without rain.
- A tank can last for 3 months, so it should be enough to supply water for the school for the whole year.
- Saving water from the rain is a trustable method also because it’s already working in some places in the slum, although it is not widely available.
Target Group
During our visits to
the schools, we agreed that the ”Fruitful Talent Center” is the one that we
want to help first because it’s a free school, which means that the parents of
these children don’t have the money to pay the school (and the approximated
cost of a school in Kibera is 2,50 USD a month). The school has 180 students,
of which 25 are orphans that live there. Since this school is for free, all the
money used to buy basic things (like water and food) comes from handmade souvenirs
made by two women that live in the place and work only to help these children
survive. Most of the time they don’t have enough money to buy water for their
children. That’s why we concluded that this is the school that most needs our
help.
The school spends 1400
liters of water in a week. This means they need 5600 L of water per month or
about a 16800L tank of water for three months. Buying this water costs them 17 USD each month, or 50 USD for three months, which is a big amount of money for them.

Objective
The idea is to install
a tank and drain pipes on the roofs of the "Fruitful Talent Center"
to collect water from the rain. The tank will have a capacity of 16000 liters of
water, in order to provide water throughout the year. In addition, this tank
will need a structure made of cement, stones and sand to make sure that nobody
can steal it.
Project Implementation
Project Implementation
We (Yasmin and
Valeria) will do a fundraiser to collect money to develop the project first in
“Fruitful Talent Center”, but according to the budget that we fundraise, we
want to implement the project in more schools in Kibera.
We need that you, Ken
Tank, as a company committed to society and the less favored people, to support
us with a 50 % discount in the total price of the tank.
Our compromise
Our compromise
Our compromise is to
conclude successfully the project and show you the results of our work in a
short and long term. Also we offer:
1. Including your logo
in AHCP’s website and Facebook page.
2. Mentioning your company in our NGO material.
3.
Advertising your products on our
programs.
4.AHCP
will have your name and logo on promotional material.
We
are confident these sponsorship visibility will provide an advantageous
opportunity for your company to increase its network and recognition. It is
also a great chance to help the children of Kibera slum get a better life and
education, and to give them a better future.
Feel
free to ask any kind of return what may benefit you as a company.
